Quartek has a staff of 34, which includes 5 registered architects, 3 professional urban planners, an OAAAS  Licenced Technologist, a registered interior designer, 6 professional engineers and 3 graduate engineers-in-training (EIT). Our design team is supported by technicians and technologists with extensive experience in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and project management.  From a resource perspective, we are Niagara’s largest multi-disciplined Architectural & Engineering design firm.

Doug Peters

Doug has been a principal of the firm since 1992. After leading the civil/municipal engineering group for 20+ years, he assumed the role of President in November 2015. Doug has 37 years experience in management, design, approvals and contract administration for private development and municipal infrastructure projects. He has prepared servicing studies, drainage reports, and sewer studies, and has experience in surveying and soils testing. He has considerable expertise in linear infrastructure, development engineering, stormwater management, irrigation, watermain network analysis, pumping station design, and multi-disciplined project management.

Robert’s current role in Corporate Development follows 5 years as President, from 2010 until 2015. He has been a principal of the firm since he joined in 1998, coming from a partnership with Stan Butcherd in Port Colborne. He contributes 29 years of practical experience in design, construction, contract administration, and business management in the architectural profession. He also brings to the team a broad background in art/technology composition, computer-aided design, and other related skills adaptive to successfully conveying ideas and spatial concepts to a broad range of clientele. His experience includes feasibility studies, space analysis, schematic planning, scheduling, graphics, signage, and interior & landscape design over a wide spectrum of building projects, particularly in office, commercial, industrial, hospital, government, institutional, and hospitality/tourism categories.

He is a senior electrical design technician with extensive experience in design and layout of electrical systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial building projects, power supply, and interior and exterior lighting for a wide variety of applications. With 30+ years of practical application with Canadian building electrical systems and equipment design, Paul offers substantial depth in the range of electrical services offered to our clients.

Patrick MacNeill

Patrick led Quartek and its predecessor companies (F.J. Reinders & Associates and MPS Niagara) for 26 years, first as Branch Manager and then as President following the buy-out by local professionals from the parent company, F. J. Reinders & Associates, in 1992. Patrick has over 35 years experience covering planning, feasibility studies, design, contract administration, and project management in regards to various municipal, environmental, transportation, commercial, recreational, and institutional projects. He has considerable experience in dealing with planning and development approvals including site planning, rezoning, official plan amendments, severances, feasibility, and transportation studies. Patrick is now semi-retired and provides added value expertise in selective areas on Quartek projects.

Norman is a Principal of the firm and an accomplished architect with 25 years of experience, more than 15 of which have been at Quartek. As Quartek’s Director of Architecture, Norman oversees production and co-ordination of technical and contract documentation, and ensures coordination of allied engineering services. His thoroughness and attention to detail is evident in each project he undertakes. Norman’s design strengths and people skills when working with clients and user groups result in an ability to efficiently manage projects from the early concepts to the finished building.

Nigel Scott

Nigel has over 30 years of design experience working on educational, institutional, commercial, entertainment, and theatre projects. Since 2003 here at Quartek, Nigel has led the design effort in many projects including multiple residential buildings, wineries, commercial/retail projects as well as numerous renovation projects under a Standing Offer Agreement with Brock University. There, he has overseen campus-wide initiatives for barrier free accessibility applying Facility Accessibility Design Standards to classrooms, washrooms, entrances and walkways. He has overseen renovation projects for the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Humanities as well as Labs for Chemistry and Biology. Since 2010 Nigel has been the Village Architect for a traditionally designed neighborhood based on the principles of new urbanism for “The Village” at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Nigel is a recognized Theatre Set and Lighting designer working in theatres coast to coast, large and small, not-for-profit, and school groups at the College and University level. This includes work at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Neptune Theatre in Halifax and Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton.

Lee Curtis

Lee has been with Quartek since 2006. Finding significant benefit in the integrated service approach, he has recently become an Associate. He has an advanced diploma in Architectural Technology from Mohawk College and is a member of both the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) and the Ontario Association of Architects as a ‘Licensed Technologist OAA’. This designation adds value to the client as Lee can manage selected projects directly rather than under supervision of an architect. This competitive advantage reduces costs while still being able to liaise with architects and engineers. Lee has worked on a variety of projects in both public and private sectors. He is involved in all aspects of project management including conceptual design, 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) and contract administration. He currently leads our construction document production staff on most architectural and multi-disciplinary projects.

Sam is an architect with over 14 years of experience and is engaged with a variety of clients and project types. His major assets include maintaining clear communication with owner and collaborating with all disciplines from the early schematic design stage through to the completion of construction. Recent notable projects include Old Fort Erie Interpretive Centre, Ridley College Athletic Complex Addition and Renovations, Meridian Credit Union Arena (Virgil), and Credit Union branch renovations for Meridian, DUCA and Polish Parishes. Sam obtained a Bachelor of Technology in Architectural Science at Ryerson University and his Master of Architecture from the University at Buffalo.

Michael has 30+ years of project management, design development, construction documentation, field review, and drafting experience. Prior to joining Quartek in 2006, Michael worked with Baker and Elmes Architects, Flemming and Baker Architects, and Lou Macie Architects. His extensive experience includes many schools, colleges, universities, and other institutional projects, as well as numerous new and renovation commercial/retail, industrial and residential projects. In his role as Quartek’s Senior Architectural Technologist, Michael organizes technical documentation for comprehensive construction instruction to contractors.

Nick Yamich

Nicholas Yamich has 8 years’ experience in the architectural field since his graduation from the University at Buffalo Masters Program. He is equipped with experience in computer aided design, 3D modeling and rendering. His contribution to the Quartek team ranges from building code review, conceptual design, space planning, technical drawing, and building specifications. Recent experience includes seniors’apartments, medical clinics and numerous credit union renovation projects.

Jordan Heckman

Jordan is responsible for coordinating drawing packages that respect the project architect’s original intent, and refining design ideas with appropriate construction methods and materials. He has expertise in Revit ,AutoCAD and Sketch-up. He produces 3-dimensional computer based models, refinements in design development and working drawings for various types of projects. Jordan is also experienced in project management and contract administration. Recent projects include ‘The Beaches’ condominium development and Bethesda Services’ new Niagara Family Centre for developmentally challenged children. Jordan is fluent in both French and English.

Paul Dempsey

Paul Dempsey has headed up the Structural Engineering Department at Quartek since 2005. He has 33 years’ experience as a structural engineer in the consulting industry. Since 1993 Paul has been responsible for project coordination, structural designs and construction review for numerous commercial, residential, institutional and industrial projects, primarily within the Niagara Region. Prior to this he spent 9 years with Acres International specializing in structural steel design for a number of powerhouses, industrial and commercial buildings. Paul has extensive experience in design of structural steel, masonry, timber, and reinforced concrete design, and in the use of computer systems for structural analysis and design. He has strong planning, organization, communication, human resources and project management skills which he employs to meet clients’ specific objectives, budgetary and scheduling requirements. Paul has a proven track record with Quartek’s multi-disciplined team to provide productive, innovative and cost conscious structural designs.

Jan has 35 years of experience in design and drafting on a wide range of building and engineering projects, particularly in the structural engineering field in high-rise construction. Other experience includes mechanical (plant process piping, building services) and detailing of shop fabrication drawings. Her range of drafting experience helps facilitate the integration of structural, mechanical, and electrical requirements for a project which creates efficiencies and innovation in the design of the project. Jan’s work includes structural and building services detailing for commercial, industrial, residential, educational and healthcare applications.

Chantel Visca

Chantel has 5 years experience in the interior design field, including space planning, finish specifications, technical drawings and millwork design. Her skills in 3D modeling are an asset to any project and aid in the client’s visualization of the space. Chantel’s knowledge of various finishes and her affinity for bringing together colour in a cohesive manner, allow her to carry great concepts through to the finishing stages of the design. Recent projects include Canadian Erectors, Bethesda’s Niagara Family Centre and a boardroom and new offices for Bosch Rexroth. For commercial projects, Chantel has developed design guideline standards for retail spaces, as well as provided experiential design for hospitality venues.

Greg A. Hynde

Greg received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Studies in 1971 from Simon Fraser University and pursued post graduate studies in Regional Planning at UBC. He Greg has extensive experience in municipal planning, including serving as Planning Director of the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Director of Planning at Conlin Engineering & Planning Ltd. For many years, Greg was a principal at Hynde Paul Planners, active in the preparation of Official Plans and O.P. Amendments, comprehensive Zoning By-laws, secondary plans, municipal restructuring studies, and land use feasibility studies. Greg has excellent skills in the facilitation of planning approvals and has been successful in obtaining approvals for a wide range of projects including new residential communities, commercial, industrial, and institutional proposals. In addition, Greg has appeared as an expert witness at administrative tribunals including the Ontario Municipal Board, the Environmental Assessment Board, and the Assessment Review Board in excess of 250 occasions. Hynde Paul came under the Quartek umbrella in 2009 and Greg continue to carry out planning services on selected projects and to provide peer review and consult as a senior planning associate. Greg is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners, The Ontario Professional Planners Institute, and the Ontario Industrial Development Council.

Leigh Whyte

Leigh has over twenty years of experience as a Senior Planner and Project Manager performing urban and environmental planning for numerous aboriginal, public, and private clients. His responsibilities have included numerous applications for rezoning and official plan amendments for land development projects, presentations and preparation of public outreach approaches, power sector consulting, GIS project management, municipal ordinance preparation, comprehensive planning, industrial site development, environmental impact statement (EIS) preparation and review, aboriginal engagement and consultation, and preparation of various environmental reports for submittal to all levels of government in Canada and the U.S. Leigh is an associate of the firm. In addition to managing Quartek’s Planning Department, he is focusing on development applications in southern Ontario and policy planning work in northern communities.

Tara Lynn O’Toole

Tara is an Urban Planner with considerable experience in both the private and public sectors. She has a wide range of planning experience including but not limited to the preparation of planning applications, planning justification reports and working closely with the public, clients and government agencies to ensure full compliance with land use planning regulations. Tara has also directed teams on multidiscipline projects from preparation of proposals, design/permit coordination, provided primary client liaison and has sat on a number of steering committees. She has a considerable amount of experience with consultation activities including open houses, public information centres, and focus groups and has developed a number of communication plans and liaised with clients, agencies and stakeholders. Since joining the Quartek team, Tara has prepared planning justification reports, prepared and filed planning applications and followed up on approvals for residential, commercial and agricultural projects.

Hank has 30+ years of experience in various aspects of the civil engineering profession and the construction industry. He has been involved in planning, environmental assessment, design, contract administration and project management for various residential, commercial, institutional and municipal infrastructure projects, primarily in the Niagara Region, including roads, watermains, sanitary and storm sewers, and related works. Hank has been involved in design and project management for numerous sewage collection and disposal systems and stormwater management.

John Prinzen is a graduate of the McMaster Engineering program and an EIT with Professional Engineers Ontario. In his 7 years with Quartek Group Inc., he has moved through various stages of design involvement to now manage and lead design on various projects including watermain, sanitary & storm sewers, storm water management, road work, subdivisions, site servicing & grading, irrigation, etc. He has carried out construction review for residential subdivisions, road reconstruction and linear infrastructure renewal. John is also knowledgeable in areas of mechanical and electrical engineering, facilitating his work on various once-off projects involving non-civil components.

Justin has 13 years experience in various aspects of engineering. In his 7 years with Quartek, he has prepared CAD plans for numerous infrastructure improvement and land development projects and is proficient in AutoDesk Civil 3D, terrain modeling and construction drawings. Justin is also Quartek’s topographic survey lead, carrying out pre-design surveys using GPS and total station equipment and preparing comprehensive, accurate CAD base plans for use in planning and design.

Wendy is a Civil Engineering graduate of the University of Waterloo. Returning to her home in the Niagara Region, Wendy joined the Quartek team in 2005 and worked for three years in various aspects of civil/municipal engineering design. While raising her three children from home, Wendy also worked in real estate before returning to Quartek in 2015. She is proficient with AutoCAD, Miduss, and HEC-RAS and performs detailed design and stormwater management on a range of projects from private subdivision and site developments to agency related works in irrigation improvements, drainage and road reconstruction.

He has considerable experience in estimating, industrial quality control and civil construction review. In his tenure with Quartek since 2012, Pete has carried out construction review and record-keeping assignments on a variety of projects, including the ‘Outlet Collection at Niagara’, Niagara-on-the-Green residential subdivision, Johnson Street Watermain Replacement, Butler Street Sewer Replacement, Tanbark Road Reconstruction, Niagara Region’s 2015 and 2016 Road Resurfacing and Asphalt Strengthening Programs, and others.

Bill Riddle

Bill is a mechanical designer with experience in design, layout, project management, and installation of mechanical systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial building projects. Specializing in power generation and piping systems with over 20+ years of experience on site and off, Bill provides substantial depth in the range of mechanical services offered to our clients. His recent projects include the General Motors Glendale plant GF6 project (under construction) which includes an 80,000 sq. ft. addition and renovating areas of the existing plant, upgrading / rebuilding 3 AMUs at the GM Glendale facility and the Hamilton Health Sciences Cogeneration Projects (3 in total) which includes a total of 22.75 MW electrical generation, 6,000 tons of cooling, 115,000 lbs/hr steam and 50 mmbtu/hr hot water production. Bill is currently seconded away from Quartek’s offices and indefinitely unavailable to be reached through Quartek email and/or telephone. His contribution to the Quartek team includes design, technical drawings and specifications with excellent skills in computer aided drafting and 3D modeling. Joel is also responsible for much of Quartek's website development and maintenance.

Ritter Melbye

Ritter is our IT Manager, and has been with Quartek since 2003. He is responsible for ensuring all computer systems, networks and electronic-related equipment are in proper working order. In addition to his IT capabilities, a variety of disciplines utilize him for drafting based on significant CAD experience. Ritter is also active in keeping our website and social media presence up to date.
